FCL vs LCL

Which one fits your shipment?

FCL — Full Container Load. You book a 20' (~28 CBM) or 40' (~58 CBM) container. Faster transit, simpler customs, lower per-CBM cost. Right when your shipment is more than ~15 CBM.

LCL — Less than Container Load. You share container space with other shippers. Right for 1–15 CBM. Slightly longer transit (deconsolidation at destination) but no container minimum.

  • FCL booking: direct with carrier, you control the cut-off and the timing.
  • LCL booking: weekly consolidation services on major lanes.
  • Reefer / DG / oversize: handled on both modes, with the right paperwork.

Customs & Documentation

Paperwork prepped before the ship sails.

Most US customs holds happen because docs are wrong, not because cargo is wrong. We get the documents right the first time.

  • Commercial invoice — correct HS codes, values, incoterms
  • Packing list — matched to actual carton counts
  • Bill of Lading — telex release supported
  • ISF (10+2) — filed ≥24h before vessel loading
  • Certificate of Origin — when needed for FTA
  • FDA / FCC / EPA paperwork — for regulated goods

Ocean FAQ

What ocean shippers ask first.

FCL or LCL — what's the breakeven?

Typically around 14–16 CBM. Below that, LCL is cheaper; above that, FCL gets you faster transit and tighter customs. We model both in the quote when you're near the line.

How does demurrage work and when does it start?

Free-time at US ports is usually 4–5 days after vessel discharge. We pre-pull containers within the window — the demurrage clock starts only if you choose to hold at port.

What's the difference between port-to-port and door-to-door?

Port-to-port is freight only; you arrange drayage and final mile yourself. Door-to-door includes destination customs, drayage, and final delivery to your address or FBA warehouse — one vendor, one invoice.

Can I use my own customs broker?

Yes. We send the docs to your broker before vessel arrival. Common for established importers with in-house compliance teams.

What's the Red Sea / Suez situation doing to my lane?

EU lanes via Suez add 7–14 days from the Cape of Good Hope diversion. We factor that into quotes and recommend earlier booking on Asia-Europe routes during Q3/Q4.

Do you book reefer containers?

Yes — refrigerated containers (reefers) for temperature-sensitive cargo. Temperature set point declared on booking; we monitor mid-transit via carrier API.
